20:15:01 Are the Brits tone deaf?
It’s safe to say that music journalist James McMahon isn’t the biggest fan of the current state of the Brit Awards.
He feels the ceremony and accompanying show are not representative of the current reality of the British music scene – suggesting they are “tone deaf” in the current format.
Find out why below…
20:00:01 Watch: Kylie Minogue speaks to Sky News
Soon-to-be-official global icon Kylie Minogue stopped to speak with Sky News on her way in to the Brits.
She described the nomination as “surreal” and outlined some of her favourite Brits moments over the years.
Watch below…
19:45:01 Reminder: Who’s up for what?
We’re not far far away from the start of the show and it’s been a busy start to the night – so let’s remind you of the all the nominees for each category:
19:30:38 Red carpet concludes
That’s it from the red (well, concrete) carpet now – our team are hotfooting it to see the show, which starts at 8.30pm.
Stick with us for all our coverage throughout the ceremony.
19:28:34 Here comes Kylie!
From our culture and entertainment reporter Gemma Peplow at the O2…
We’re finally joined by Kylie Minogue.
“Amazing… surreal,” she says on her soon-to-be global icon status.
Recalling some of her famous Brits moments over the years, she says her Blue Monday mash-up of ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’ “would have to be the ultimate – being ejected from a giant CD player.”
19:18:26 ‘Girl power all the way,’ Raye says amid record number of nominations
From our culture and entertainment reporter Gemma Peplow at the O2…
Woman of the hour Raye is here and says no speech is written, despite being up for pretty much all the awards.
On it being such a strong year for women this year, she says: “Girl power all the way.”
Getting teary about the journey to get to this point, she says: “It feels like, I can only describe it as a miracle… it’s emotional.”
Raye says a few years ago she felt “heartbroken” – now she’s a record Brits nominee.
It seems like it’s still hard for her to take it all in.
We can’t wait to see her perform tonight.
Here she is – with some added Olly Alexander in the background…
19:12:01 ‘I just like being really naughty at awards shows’
From our culture and entertainment reporter Gemma Peplow at the O2…
Charli XCX, who’s up for best pop act, says she’s here to enjoy the moment.
“I just like being really naughty at awards shows,” she tells us.
“I don’t like to take it that seriously.”
There’s a lot of love for Raye tonight and Charli is another star giving her a shout-out, saying she’s “so happy” to see an independent female artist taking the reins and showing others how to do it.
And of course, as is becoming mandatory, she’s provided a couple of Sky News selfies for you at home…
19:05:01 Becky Hill ‘honoured’ to be up for best dance act for third year running
From our culture and entertainment reporter Gemma Peplow at the O2…
Becky Hill now, and she’s up for best dance act – having won the award last year AND the year before.
It’s one that’s voted for by the public, so will her fans come through again and make it a hat-trick?
We only have time for one question we’re told, so she says we need to make it good – maybe the meaning of life?
Or her potential third win in a row?
“I’m just very grateful to be recognised in the dance category alone,” she says.
“As someone [who’s been] doing this since I was 18 – I turned 30 last week -I feel honoured,” she says, to be up against so many other big acts in the genre.
And her Sky News selfie…
18:49:19 Giraffe’s identity revealed – as familiar face joins Green Day for pictures
From our culture and entertainment reporter Gemma Peplow at the O2…
We’ve got Green Day, who tell us it’s more fun here than the Grammys.
“People at the Grammys look like they’re going to die,” jokes frontman Billie Joe Armstrong.
In other news, they too have seen the giraffe, they tell us, although that’s the polite version of what they actually said…
On still making music after so many years, Armstrong says they’re “addicted to the adrenaline”.
Here’s their Sky News selfie…
Now some breaking news: The giraffe we just reported on is in fact comedian Rob Beckett.
We don’t know why, but let’s put this man on all the Brits best-dressed stories, please.
He didn’t stop to talk or explain his sartorial choice – a giraffe has places to be, it turns out, but he did insist on joining Green Day for pictures right in front of us.
18:43:16 An update from the concrete carpet
We’ve just received this update from the team at the O2:
Breaking red (concrete) carpet news – no sign of Raye or Kylie yet, but we can confirm there is a giant inflatable giraffe here.
More on this as we get it.
