Donald Trump: All you need to know about the legal labyrinth facing the former president

Donald Trump is currently facing the prospect of not being on the ballot in the state of Maine, after a legal decision barred him from running for president there.

Maine secretary of state Shenna Bellows ruled that Mr Trump incited an insurrection when he spread false claims about voter fraud in the 2020 election and then urged his supporters to march on the Capitol on 6 January 2021.

While it only applies to the primaries in March, it could impact his chances of potentially winning the state in November, should he be selected as the Republican nominee.

He will likely appeal, as he vowed to do with a similar ruling in Colorado.

Similar lawsuits have also been filed in Minnesota, New Hampshire, Arizona and Michigan.

Trump’s journey through the courts is turning into a legal labyrinth.

You’d be forgiven for losing track, so here’s a refresher guide.

New York civil action

The New York civil action accuses the Trump Organisation of a long-running scheme to inflate company assets to secure loans and insurance policies on more favourable terms.

The presiding judge has already agreed that it did – what remains to be decided is the punishment.

New York’s attorney-general Letitia James wants a $250m (£205m) penalty and a ban on Trump and his sons from running a business in New York.

Interfering with 2020 election

In Fulton County, Georgia, Trump faces 13 charges of conspiring to interfere with the results of the 2020 election.

The former president is accused alongside 14 co-defendants and is charged with being at the centre of the alleged criminal enterprise.

There were 18 co-defendants but four have taken plea deals, promising to cooperate with the prosecution and to testify.

Ominously – perhaps – for Trump, three are lawyers who worked with him as he sought to stay in office.

Trump denies the charges against him. No date has yet been set for trial.

In Washington DC, criminal charges faced by Trump cover some of the same ground.

There, special prosecutor Jack Smith has laid four charges relating to an allegedly illegal effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election by falsely claiming election fraud.

The prosecution will also pursue Trump for his alleged role in the events leading up to the January 6th insurrection.

In this case, Donald Trump is indicted alone, and he denies the charges against him.

A trial has been set for March 2024.

Possession and misuse of classified government documents

In Miami, Florida, Trump faces prosecution over the possession and misuse of classified government documents.

He’s accused of taking the sensitive material with him when he left office and storing it at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.

Some documents were found in boxes piled in a bathroom.

They are said to have contained details of nuclear programmes and vulnerabilities in the US military.

Forty charges include a claim that Trump showed a document, which outlined plans to attack another country, to a writer and publisher at his New Jersey golf club. Neither had appropriate security clearance.

Trump is also accused, along with two members of his staff, with conspiring to delete Mar-a-Lago security footage.

He denies the charges against him. The judge has indicated a trial date of May 2024.

Hush-money payments

Back in New York, Trump faces 34 felony charges related to hush money payments to the former porn-star, Stormy Daniels.

She claims she had an affair with Trump, which he denies, and was about to go public with it in the run-up to the 2016 election.

Trump sent his lawyer, Michael Cohen, to pay her $130,000 (£106,000) to kill the story.
