08:59:00 Up to 10cm of snow could fall in Scotland and northern England
Met Office meteorologist Honor Chiswick said Scotland will see “more and more snow showers” as the week goes on.
“The warning is of 2cm to 5cm of snow, throughout the week there is the possibility we will see a build up of snow,” Ms Chiswick said.
“On Tuesday, we are going to see more rain turning to snow moving east across the country, with more prolonged snow and more accumulations at low levels in the north of Scotland and northern England.
“That’s where we could see 5cm or 10cm of snow in low-lying areas.”
08:56:43 Temperatures set to be up to 6C lower than usual
Temperatures are set to be up to 6C lower than usual for this time of year today, a Met Office meteorologist has said.
Liam Eslick warned a strong northerly wind will bring Arctic airmass to parts of the country, which will cause icy conditions and maximum temperatures of 0C in parts of Scotland.
In the south of England, temperatures are expected to sit between 2C and 4C, he said.
A snow and ice warning is in place from 3am today until 9am on Tuesday across Northern Ireland with another for ice in place until 11am today across parts of northeast Wales and North West England from Liverpool to the West Midlands.
In Scotland, a similar warning is in place in northern areas until midnight on Monday.
The Met Office has also issued a warning for snow and ice in parts of East Anglia, including Norwich, which runs from 7am today until midnight.
Warnings in Scotland will spread across the whole of the country and into northern England tomorrow.
A snow warning will be in place from midnight on Wednesday until midnight on Thursday across Northern Ireland, northern and western Scotland, and parts of northern England and Wales.
08:44:28 Drivers face being stranded and communities cut off
Drivers face being stranded as the National Highways issued a severe weather alert for snow affecting the North West.
Road users have been advised to plan ahead, and some rural communities warned they could be temporarily cut off.
Rail services may also be delayed or cancelled, National Highways added.
Between 5cm and 10cm of snow is possible on the A66 and M62 – while other parts of the North West could see between 1cm and 5cm.
Met Office meteorologist Liam Eslick said travel disruption was “likely”, especially in the North.
“We would recommend people stick to the main roads and avoid country lanes where possible.
“These are the places that aren’t going to see any gritting or any road clearances for the next couple of days.
“So we recommend people take their time, make sure they have time to do their cars in the mornings, and go steady.”
He said that icy conditions were expected, with maximum temperatures of 0C in parts of Scotland, and only 2C to 4C in southern parts of the UK.
