Temperatures could drop as low as -8C in the Scottish Highlands overnight tonight, with most places not making it above freezing, according to the Met Office.

It’s not just the UK feeling the cold snap – other countries in Europe have seen snowfall and freezing temperatures today.

Germany

Major settlements, such as Berlin, have seen snow today, with the mercury set to drop to -6C overnight tonight. 

Czech Republic

Plummeting temperatures have seen snow fall in the Czech Republic, where temperatures have hit lows of -3C.

Ukraine

Snow has fallen in Lviv, western Ukraine, where temperatures haven’t made it past freezing today.

North East Lincolnshire, which includes the towns of Grimsby and Cleethorpes, will be sending out gritters at 7pm.

The region is facing temperatures of 2C in the early hours of the morning.

With the cold weather comes the risk of icy roads overnight. 

Gritters in Sunderland were lined up just after midnight last night ready to treat the roads in the city amid plummeting temperatures.

The Met Office says there will be clear spells this evening with showers for parts of England and Scotland.

However, it adds there will be those icy stretches under the clear skies.

16:36:18 Coldest November night for 13 years last night for some parts of UK

Parts of the UK experienced the coldest November night for 13 years last night, according to the BBC.

At Aonach Mor in the Scottish Highlands, the mercury dropped to -8C – the lowest November temperature since 2010.

The Met Office said it recorded the three lowest temperatures of the night in Cumbria. These were -7.2C in Bridgefoot, -6.5C in Shap and -6.1C in Keswick.

The cold weather in the north-east has triggered Newcastle’s Severe Weather Emergency Protocol.

The scheme helps those rough sleeping in the city get a place to stay if temperatures drop below freezing for one night.

Three corners of the UK could be covered in a fresh layer of snow or ice tonight, with freezing temperatures potentially turning rain into several centimetres of snow.

In its latest graphic, the Met Office highlights parts of eastern Scotland and northeast England, southwestern areas and a large section of Northern Ireland as liable to more snowfall.
