As soon as the final whistle blows in the stadium, the fanzone nearby in Gelsenkirchen erupts with cheers as the result sinks in for England.
Meanwhile back inside the Veltins-Arena Sweet Caroline blasts from the speakers.
21:54:08 Full-time England 1-0 Serbia
They did it – England beat Serbia to go top of their group.
Gareth Southgate’s side made hard work of their opening match – with lots of areas for improvement heading into Thursday’s 5pm clash with Denmark, their second Group C match.
England head towards that game as group leaders after Denmark and Slovenia drew their opening game earlier.
Remember, the top two teams definitely qualify for the last 16 – with the four best third-placed sides also qualifying.
Realistically, three points this evening mean they probably only need another point to guarantee qualification.
Jude Bellingham was the standout performer coming off the back of a stellar first season at Real Madrid in which he helped lead them to the Champions league glory. The 20-year-old’s 13th-minute goal proved to be the winner.
21:50:47 Four minutes extra time
It’s tense in the stadium and across England’s bars and pubs…
21:46:48 Substitute: Bellingham comes off
Jude Bellingham is replaced by Manchester United rookie Kobbie Mainoo to a huge round of applause from the crowd.
God Save The King breaks out shortly after he sits down.
21:42:52 Pickford save
Jordan Pickford saves an attempt from Serbia’s Vlahovic, tipping it over the bar to cheers from the England stands.
21:37:33 Kane’s near-miss
Harry Kane’s header is saved by Serbia and pushed onto the crossbar.
Another near-miss for England.
21:36:24 (Another) substitute: Saka off for Bowen
Southgate makes another change – bringing off Bukayo Saka in lieu of West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen.
21:30:54 Substitute: Gallagher on for Alexander-Arnold
Gareth Southgate decides to take Trent Alexander-Arnold off – on the 69th minute.
The Liverpool man has looked comfortable in an unfamiliar defensive midfield role, bar giving the ball away to present Serbia with a chance in the first half.
On comes Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher – perhaps to bring a bit more energy to England’s midfield.
21:17:38 Slight change in reaction among England fans
There’s a bit more anxiety in the stands in Gelsenkirchen and back home as Serbia appear to start stronger in the second half.
Nerves aren’t eased when Aleksandar Mitrovic falls inside the box after contact from Kieran Trippier, but it’s not enough for a penalty and Jordan Pickford (eventually) smothers the ball.
21:10:01 Goal celebrations around the country
Watch the reaction to England going 1-0 ahead in Wembley, Brighton, and Newcastle.
